<p>Amides of polybasic aliphatic carboxylic acids are used as skin-moisture retainers in cosmetic compsns., esp. skin-care, -protective and -cleansing compsns. Amides are of formula R1(-CONR2R3)n, (I) (where R is 1-8C aliphatic hydrocarbyl; R2 and R3 are H, 1-4C alkyl, a 2-6C hydroxy-, dihydroxy- or trihydroxy-alkyl gp. and n is integer 2-6. If n = 2, R1 may be covalent bond between the carboxylamide gps.). Concn. of (I), w.r.t. total compsn., is 1-20 (3-10) wt. %. Cosmetic compsns. include creams, sun-tan creams and emulsions, soaps, bath oils, foam baths and lotions. (I) are colourless to light yellow, crystalline or highly viscous, stable, non-toxic prods. and are easily worked into cosmetic emulsions. Tests on dried pigskin showed that addn. of (I) to compsns. can increase water-retention by >=10% at 30% RH, rehydration by >=10% at 90 RH, and elasticity after loading by >=1.8 mm at 90% RH. In an example, a day-cream contained 3% malonic acid bis-ethanolamide.</p> |
