Support system for galleries, roadways, tunnels or shafts consists of a main load bearing concrete shell with water barrier held to the rock beyond the shell. The barrier (3) is joined to the rock (2) or covering by flexible strips (4) connected along one rim (5) to the rock and along the other rim to the barrier seal (3). The strips thus form a series of compartments between rock and seal which can be filled with ramming material (10) held in place by the strips which are impervious to this and seal tight to the rock or covering either side. The strips should be water-permeable between the two rims joined to the rock or covering (2). The seal face (12) turned to the rock should be watertight. Preferably the strip (5) rims (5) joined to the rock should bear against a plastics layer (6) and be locked to the rock by dowels (7), after which the rims are covered in their turn by a further layer of plastics (8).
