As the shaft rotates each tooth 12, 14 induces a pulse in a coil 22 of a shielded pick-up head 20. The pulse train is fed through a filter 26, 28 to a network 30 which converts it to a synchronous square pulse train whose trailing edges trigger a bi-stable multi-vibrator 42 and produce a variable ratio mark/space pulse train whose average value, determined by D.C. filter 62, is proportional to the twist of the shaft 10, and therefore to the shaft torque. The circuit voltage V o is automatically varied with ambient temperature as measured by a thermocouple to compensate for changes in shaft twist with temperature.</p> |
