An electrochemical cell comprises an anode, a cathode, and an electrolyte chamber between the anode and cathode and formed, in part, by the anode and cathode, the electrolyte chamber being filled, at least partly, by an electrolyte resistant refractory metal oxide consisting of thorium oxide, cerium oxide, zirconium oxide, aluminium oxide, mixtures thereof, or mixtures thereof with silica. The refractory metal oxide may be in the form of a porous sintered body in the electrolyte chamber, free-flowing particles filling or substantially filling the electrolyte chamber or an inert layer on an electrochemically reactive metal layer of at least one of the anode and cathode, the inert layer being located in the electrolyte chamber. In an example, cerium oxide powder is compacted and sintered in the form of a ring, and is used as an electrolyte matrix in a fuel cell in the presence of an aqueous potassium hydroxide solution. |
