Synthetic resins containing ester groups are stabilized by adding to one of the starting components for the production of the resin, during the production of the resin or to the synthetic resin itself an aryl cyanate. Suitable aryl cyanates are phenyl cyanate, o-, m- or p-phenylene dicyanate; o-, m- or p-methyl-phenyl cyanate; o-, m- or p-acetyl phenyl cyanate; o-, m- or p-nitrophenyl cyanate; n-nonyl phenyl cyanate; isododecyl-phenyl cyanate; 22 - bis(p - cyanato - phenyl) - propane; 1,3,5 - tricyanatobenzene; 1,5 - naphthalene dicyanate; o -, m - or p - dimethylaminophenyl cyanate and 4-dimethylamino-3-methyl-phenyl cyanate. Polyfunctional cyanic acid esters may also be used. The aryl cyanates may be used as such or in solution in an organic solvent such as acetone, chloroform, ethyl alcohol, dimethylformamide, carbon tetrachloride, acetonitrile and dimethylsulphoxide. Examples describe the stabilization of polyurethanes derived from polyester, but alkyd resins, polyester resins from polymerizable monomers and fumaric or maleic acid derived polyesters,copolymers of ethylene and vinyl esters, polymers of acrylic and methacrylic acid esters and their copolymers with vinyl esters and fluorinated acrylic esters may be similarly stabilized. |
