The material based on polymethyl methacrylate contains a liquid component and a solid component. The liquid component essentially comprises a methyl methacrylate/water emulsion. The solid component preferably contains short-cut reinforcing fibres, in particular synthetic fibres. The material is suitable as bone cement for fixing artificial hip and knee joints or the like in the bone. The material generates a low polymerisation temperature and after curing has a low residual monomer content and a structure similar to that of the bone.
