Tag on capacitor winding joined to inside of can base - with retractable anvil pressing tag onto base for ultrasonic welding

A terminal tag on a winding impregnated with electrolyte, is welded ultrasonically with the inner wall of a capacitor can in which the winding is placed. The free end of the tag is pressed by a rod-shaped anvil against the inner wall and a sonotrode is pressed against the outer surface of the can-base opposite the anvil. The tag is located round the end of the anvil, and the anvil and winding inserted in the can until they meet the can-base. Welding is then carried out, and the anvil is withdrawn via the gap between the winding and the tag. The working surface of the sonotrode pref. includes a stamp so that a trade mark or the name of a company can be stamped in the base of the can simultaneously with the welding operation. The anvil pref. has a shape to match the radii of the winding and the can. The process is used e.g. with Al cans in mfg. electrolytic capacitors. A simple mass prodn. process producing a reliable weld.
