A lower layer or wholly enclosed reinforcing strip 121 may be of rigid P.V.C., polyolefin or cellulose plastics, cloth, aluminium, copper, stainless steel or perforated or expanded steel. The strip or its upper portion may be of polyurethane or polyamide and may be multicoloured or fluorescent and have replaceable insert strips. The strip may be fixed to a concrete, wood, stone or steel step by separately applied adhesive or by pressure sensitive adhesive tape incorporated in the strip. The strip is preferably formed by extruding the plastics onto a perforated reinforcing strip. Two separate layers of different plastics may be so extruded.
