1482129 Vehicle washing apparatus G WEIGELE and J SULZBERGER 2 Oct 1974 [4 Oct 1973] 42805/74 Heading B7J Vehicle washing apparatus, Fig. 1, comprises two rotating brushes 1 mounted to swing about horizontal pivot axes 5, which are transverse to the longitudinal axis of a vehicle 8 moving relative to the apparatus in a direction A parallel to the longitudinal axis of the vehicle, each brush being movable from an initial position close to the longitudinal axis of the vehicle along a path transverse to the vehicle axis to a lateral position remote from the vehicle axis, and the axes of rotation D of the brushes 1 when in their initial position prior to contact with the vehicle being inclined at an acute angleαto the vertical V. The pivot axis 5 is offset from the axis D so that the lower end of the brush 1 is initially inclined towards the approaching vehicle to thus improve the brush contact with the vehicle front surface while the brushes progress to their lateral position. The brushes 1 then clean the vehicle sides and rear, returning to their original position. In a modification, Fig. 5, each brush 1 is provided with a second brush 1a to form a downwardly diverging pair of brushes, rotatable about a common pivot axis 5 and counterweighted at 11. The angle 8 between the axes of rotation D, Da of the brushes 1, 1a is preferably twice the angleαby which the brush 1 is again inclined to the vertical in its initial position.
