1481860 Flame retardant unsaturated polyesters CIBA-GEIGY AG 13 Nov 1974 [13 Nov 1973 6 Aug 1974] 49204/74 Headings C3R and C3P A flame retardant linear unsaturated polyester is derived from an unsaturated dicarboxylic acid and a diol of the formula in which X is chlorine or bromine, R 1 and R 1 <SP>1</SP> are hydrogen, methyl, ethyl or phenyl and R 2 and R 2 <SP>1</SP> are hydrogen or R 1 and R 2 and/or R 1 <SP>1</SP> and R 2 <SP>1</SP> are trimethylene or tetramethylene. The examples describe the preparation of unsaturated polyesters from the following compounds: maleic anhydride, fumaric acid, 1,3- di(2<SP>1</SP> - hydroxyethyl) - 4,5,6,7 - tetra - chloro or bromo - benzimidazolone, 1,3 - di(2<SP>1</SP>- hydroxyn - propyl) - 4,5,6,7 - tetrachlorobenzimidazolone, phthalic anhydride, adipic acid, sebacic acid, isophthalic acid, terephthalic acid, ethylene glycol, diethylene glycol, polyethylene glycol (600), neopentyl glycol and 1,12-dodecanediol. The unsaturated polyester may be cured with a copolymerizable monomer, e.g. styrene, and a polymerization catalyst.
