1481883 Apparatus for forming multi-layer blocks of rod-shaped articles; shoots HAUNIWERKE KORBER & CO KG 20 Sept 1974 [22 Sept 1973] 40986/74 Headings B8C and B8S Apparatus for forming multi-layer blocks consisting of predetermined numbers of cigarettes, or analogous rod-shaped articles, comprises a magazine 1 for a supply of parallel rod-shaped articles 7, first and second articlefeeding means respectively including a first and second group of ducts 12, 14 having inlets communicating with said magazine and end portions remote from and located at a level below said inlets so that each of said ducts slopes downwardly, at least in part, intermediate said inlet and said end portion thereof to allow the articles of said supply to descend therein by moving sideways said end portions of said first group of ducts 12 being spaced apart from said end portions of said second group of ducts, and third article-feeding means including at least one additional duct 16 having an inlet communicating with said magazine and an end portion located at a level below said last mentioned inlet to allow the articles of said supply to descend into the end portion by moving sideways, the end portion of said additional duct being disposed between, and being inclined with respect to, the end portions of said first and second group of ducts. According to the invention also the end portions of said first and second group of ducts 12, 14 and of said at least one additional duct 16 together constitute a block-forming station 19 and means 36, 37 is provided for expelling the articles from said block-forming station at such intervals that said block-forming station is refilled with articles between successive expulsions, the expelled articles forming a block of rod-shaped articles. As shown, a supply hopper 1, with front and back walls 4, 4, is separated by two bridges 4, 4 into three compartments 8, 9, 11 which supply cigarettes 7 to the three duct groups 12, 13, 14. Each of the latter has a set of tapering walls 17 the upper, thicker, ends of which support grooved, vibrating feed rolls 18 driven alternately in opposite directions and the lower ends of which form horizontal, and vertical, block-forming ducts 21, 22, and 23 respectively. The outer walls of the vertical ducts 23 close the front ends of the ducts 21, 22. The cigarettes 7, forming a block for filling a 7-7-7 cigarette packet, as shown by hatching, are pushed through a mouthpiece 34 which compresses them into a block, by nine ejection fingers 36 which transfer the block into a corresponding receptacle, not shown. A similar arrangement, Fig. 3, not shown, forms a twolayer block. In a further embodiment, Fig. 4, the third set of ducts 213 opens obliquely into the block-forming station 224 to form a block with three layers containing respectively 7-6-7 cigarettes. The base of the block-forming station is closed off by a base plate 29, Fig. 1, or, 229, Fig. 4.
