1467975 Casting processes CONSORTIUM FUR ELEKTROCHEMISCHE INDUSTRIE GmbH 22 March 1974 [27 March 1973] 12944/74 Heading B3F [Also in Division C7] An alloy melt containing at least one component having a high vapour pressure, e.g. an alloy of Cd, Hg and Te, is cooled and solidified within a sealed ampoule 5 having a volume between 5 cm.<SP>3</SP> and 50 cm.<SP>3</SP>, the volume of the ampoule which is not filled with melt being less than 2 cm.<SP>3</SP>. The ampoule 5 may be made of quartz and may be provided with a rod 6 and a capillary tube 8. After the ampoule has been evacuated, filled with Cd, Hg and Te, e.g. by distillation, and sealed, it is heated to 810‹ C. in a rocking furnace (1), Fig. 1 (not shown), and rocked about 200 times. It is then removed from the furnace and cooled by lowering it into an oil bath 12 while rotating it about its longitudinal axis. Alternatively, it may be cooled by directing a stream of cold gas against it. An example describes the preparation of a homogeneous alloy of the composition Cd 0À2 Hg 0À8 Te. |
