Phenol and m-cresol are predominantly para-nitrated by adding to an aqueous mixed acid solution containing 1-10 moles/1. HNO3, 0.4-2 moles/l. HNO2 and 1.7-6.4 moles/l. H2SO4 (HNO3:HNO2 = at least 1 mole), in a manner avoiding oil formation at -20 DEG to +25 DEG C. and 0 to 100 p.s.i.g.; the amount of added phenol, which in total does not exceed 5 moles/l. of the solution, being such that the number of moles/l. HNO3 always exceeds the number of moles/l. phenol by at least one.
