Graft copolymers based on polyvinyl chloride produced by reacting a mixture containing at least 30% polyvinyl chloride with 10-50% of an alpha-olefinically unsaturated compound and/or a polymer derived from such compounds together with 0.2-2% of radical donors under pressure at 100-200 deg.C., for 10-45 min. Impact toughness increased as well as heat stability with little or no loss of non-flammability and other desirable properties. Olefinic substance preferably contains a tertiary C atom; stabilisers, lubricants, dyestuffs and fillers may be present; suitable radical donors are azodicarboxylic acid derivatives and various peroxides.
