<p>1,214,212. Slitting webs. WIGGINS TEAPE RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT Ltd. 20 May, 1969 [7 June, 1968], No. 27293/68. Heading B4B. Apparatus for slitting web(s) 1, e.g. of paper, drawn from a reel 2, comprises at least three slitting knives 3-7, one of which, 3, is movable into and out of engagement with the web 1 along its longitudinal centre line 13, and support means 14-17 for the other knives 4-7 such that they are engageable with the web 1 on opposite sides of the centre line 13, knife-position-adjusting means 24-27 allowing simultaneous corresponding adjustment of the support means 14-17 at right-angles to the centre line 13 to vary the width of ribbons 8-10 slit from the web 1. The knives 3-7 are co-operable with a drum (18), Fig. 2 (not shown), and are moved into or out of operative position on pivoted arms 19 actuated, e.g. by pneumatic cylinders 21. The supports 14-17 are slidable on a location bar 29, being simultaneously adjustable in separation by left-hand 26, 27 and right-hand 24, 25 screws on a spindle 30. Turner bars 31-33 may be provided to change the ribbon direction, those bars on either side of a fixed central bar 31 being laterally movable by screws 36, 37 on a spindle 38, driven in unison with the spindle 30 by a motor 41. Two sets of apparatus, Fig. 6, may produce and superimpose two sets of ribbons, second stage turner bars 44, 44a being employed, and edge detector devices A, B ensuring alignment, and the apparatus may be combined with means for marking, punching &c. Preferably, cambered rolls (not shown) are positioned immediately in advance of the knives to keep the web taut, and automatic control may be incorporated.</p> |
