Stored radioactive solid waste used for power generation - with silicone oil as heat storage and transfer medium

An installation for generating electrical energy from radioactive waste products stored in the form of vitrified or ceramic blocks is based upon storage of the blocks in disused salt mines. The surface temp. of the blocks is permitted to rise to a predetermined value and gas is circulated through them. This gas circulates into a vessel, partially filled with silicone oil with an inert gas blanket above it. Heat exchangers in this vessel transfer the heat to a boiler, in which water is heated and generates steam to operate a turbogenerator.
