<p>The valves are opened electromagnetically by a mechanical arrangement. The electrical energy is supplied by a generator or a battery. A control unit is driven from the crankshaft through a 2:1 ratio. This control unit consists of a contact-maker in the shape of a rotating drum in which three segments are mounted. The segments are continuously connected to the electrical supply. The first segment is used for current supply and is connected to two others which are used for the inlet and outlet valves. The segments also represent the opening angles of the valves. For a four cylinder engine, four carbon brushes are mounted, spaced at 90 deg. When a brush makes contact with a segment, an electromagnet is powered which opens a valve against a spring by a control rod.</p> |
