The seat frame carries the fixed part of the backrest hinge (13). The pivoting part (17) is fixed to the backrest frame and formed as a toothed segment (23) at its lower end. The toothed segment engages with a toothed wedge (18) whose turning axis (x-x) lies crossways to the backrest pivot axis. The wedge is formed as a lobe on a sprung shaft which is provided with a hand lever (20). The toothed wedge extends over a quarter of a circle. The teeth on the wedge incline progressively against the pivot meshing direction to self lock. The meshing side ends of the teeth taper to show roof-shaped flanks. The fixed tooth segment (17) is similarly formed.
