<p>A mixt. of stable epoxy resin solns. self-emulsifiable with H2O comprises (a) 5-95 wt. % of a mixt. of epoxy resin derivs. of formulae (I) and (V) and (b) 5-95 wt. % of a mixt. of (I') and (V'). (I) R'-O (D).(E) n(D).R3 E=-CH2.C(R4)OH. CH2.O-;R2 and R4 = H and/or CH3; R3 = -CH2.C(R4)OH. CH2.+NH.R5R6---A-, where R5 and R6 can be H and -CH2. CH2OH, H and -CH2. CHOH.CH3 ro -CH2. CH2OH and -CH2. CHOH. CH3 and A- is a monocarboxylic anion. In these formulae, n = 1.3-13 and the resins have epoxy equivs. of 300-2000 and softening points (Durrans) of 50 degrees-125 degrees C. Components (I') and (V') of (b) both have the general formula CH2OF.CHOF.CH2OF, where F= R3'.O( A .B).CH2C(R4')OHCHiOCH(R1')(R2')CO-. In F, R3' = R1, where R4 = R4' in formula (V') and either R1 or R3 in formula (I').A = (D)(E) n' and B=(E),R2 being the sam in each case or A=(E) or CH2CH(CH3)-O)8-11 and B is absent; R1 = -(CH2)5.CH3; R2'=-(CH2)7-CH=CH.CH2- and n'=0-13. The resin (b) has an epoxy equiv. of 440-4000 and the sum of (a)+(b) = 100%. Used in surface coatings for high duty applications. Epoxy resins have previously been used in powder coatings but, in spite of the undoubted advantages as regards durability, poor flow results in poor surface properties. A high investment cost is involved in the process of powder coating manufacture. The invention avoids these problems by use of an aqueous system which does not involve-costly or inflammable solvents. In an example an epoxy resin reacted with ricinoleic acid triglyceride was used to modify the same untreated resin and a 150; 33 mixt. was reacted with diethanolamine and lactic acid to give a satisfactory H2O-dispersible prod.</p> |
