The chamber is supplied by a feed screw (E, Figs. 1, 3 and 4 not shown) having a feed hopper M and a feed ram in a conduit (P) in frame extension R actuated by a cylinder S, which stuffs material from the hopper with the feed screw. There are heat exchanger passages in the walls of the feed, mixing and discharge chambers. As described the rotor has a two-start conveying screw section 20, and a processing section comprising two pairs of blades 12, 14 and 16, 18 which are rotated with convex edges leading and are aranged so that adjacent ends of the pairs are trailing. The chamber discharges into a discharge screw G which may be used to control the back pressure. The blades 12, 14 are as shown larger than the blades 16, 18; the blades of each pair are. equal in length, displaced by 180‹ from each other and 90‹ from those of the other pair, and extend 10‹-195‹ about the rotor body. The blades 12, 14 have a right hand preferably helical twist with a lead angle of 50‹ to 80‹; the blades 16, 18 are lefthanded and have a lead angle preferably 10‹ to 70‹ less than that of the other pair. |
