The preparation of polymer-sheathed optical fibres from glass comprises the following steps: drawing down the fibre from a blank or hauling glass from the mouth of a double crucible (containing glass solutions of the future fibre core and sheath), immediately thereafter applying a first overcoat, immediately thereafter or later applying a further, extruded coat on top of the first overcoat. The fibre produced has very good long-term strength, since the coatings do a good job in protecting the glass surface of the naked fibre from atmospheric effects. |
