1455188 Heating devices utilizing exothermic chemical reactions; cooling by endothermic reactions S SATO 12 Feb 1974 [29 May 1973] 06404/74 Headings F4X and F4H A food or beverage container 11 which is heated or cooled by an exothermic or endothermic chemical reaction comprises three compartments namely, a food or beverage containing compartment A, a compartment B containing reaction agent, e.g. caustic lime or sodium nitrate, and a compartment C containing reaction inducing agent, e.g. water, and a needle member 23 arranged to puncture a partition 16 separating the compartments B and C and so permit mixing of the reactants. As shown the needle member 23 has said tooth portions 29 adjacent a base region 27 and an axially extending passage 30. Upon removal of a safety cap 35, upward pressure applied to a pleated bottom cover 19 causes the tip 32 of the needle member to pierce through both a tubular portion 24 and a spherical portion 21 of the partition 16 and the sawtooth portions 29 to cut longitudinally extending slots in the portion 24. The container proper 11 is made from aluminium coated paper or synthetic resin and is covered with a layer 34 of foamed synthetic resin. In an alternative embodiment (Fig. 5, not shown), the needle member (41) comprises a length of bent wire. The reaction agent-containing compartment B may be arranged around the reaction inducing agent compartment C (see Figs. 6-8, not shown).
|
