1400979 Photo-polymerizable compositions CONTINENTAL CAN CO Inc 10 April 1973 [10 April 1972] 17026/73 Headings C3B and C3P A photo-polymerizable composition comprises (I) >30% by wt. of a #-hydroxy ester prepared by reacting a polyepoxide with a C 3-6α,#- ethylenically unsaturated acid (e.g. as described and claimed in copending Specification 1,400,978) and (II) <20% by wt. of a polyitaconate prepared by reacting a polyepoxide with itaconic acid. In preparing I the polyepoxide to acid molar ratio may be 1 : 1 to 1 : 2; a minor amount of the unsaturated acid may be replaced by a C 3-18 saturated monocarboxylic acid. In preparing II substantially equimolar amounts of polyepoxide, e.g. a mixture of an aromatic and aliphatic polyepoxide, may be reacted with itaconic acid, a minor amount of which may be replaced by a saturated dicarboxylic acid, e.g. a C 36 dimer acid. The polymerizable mixture may also include an acrylic ester of a polyhydric alcohol, e.g. pentaerythritol tetraacrylate. A photo-sensitizer, e.g. 1-chloro, 2- methylanthraquinone may also be present. A printing ink, suitable for metallic surface may comprise 30-55% by wt. of #-hydroxy ester, 2-10% by wt. of polyitaconate, 40-70% of an acrylic ester as described above and 0À1-5% by wt. of a photo-sensitizer. After coating on a substrate the coating may be cured by exposure to ultraviolet radiation followed by heating the surface, e.g. at at least 150‹ C.
|
