In the separation of ethylene from normally gaseous hydrocarbon mixtures, the mixture is treated at low temperature and high pressure with propane or a propane-propene mixture which is then separated into its components by fractional distillation. Specified preliminary treatments include the removal of acetylene, sulphur compounds, carbon oxides and water, and distillation to remove compounds containing 4 or more carbon atoms. The lean oil is said to absorb practically all of the hydrocarbons other than methane but to allow a proportion of the other components to pass on. |
