Heading B1C, A batch or continuous discharge mixer 10 has a chamber 16 in the form of two intersecting, invented, heat-jacketed frusto-cones 24, 26 (see also Fig. 2, not shown), and two stirrers 18, 20 each comprising (as shown, two) tapering helical ribbon elements 56, which can be given a motion of rotation and of simultaneous axial reciprocation. The two stirrers counterrotate and their helices are of opposite hand so that the stirrers intermesh; their relative phase angle can be adjusted. The axial motion may be arrested to provide rotary motion only with any desired mutual clearance between the helices and between the stirrers and the chamber 16. A pipe may be inserted through a hollow stirrer shaft (Fig. 7, not shown) into the space in the middle of the stirrer to measure temperature or viscosity, inject a fluid or withdraw a sample from any desired level in the mix. The stirrer elements may be of rectangular cross-section; in order to provide a transverse component of motion to the mix the leading face may be oblique to the direction of motion (see Figs. 5 and 6, not shown) or the cross-section may be a triangle or trapezium (Figs. 8 and 9, not shown); or (if the sense of rotation of the stirrer is to be reversible) a rhombus (Fig. 10, not shown). The stirrers exert a downward force on the material which effects its discharge through the outlet 36, which may be provided with a closure (not depicted) for batch operation. The length, width or cross-section of the stirrer elements bear a constant proportion to that of the mixing chamber. The chamber may be placed under reduced pressure when it is used as a reaction vessel. |
