Silencer for pneumatically powered equipment is of the straight through, absorption type, and comprises a cylindrical casing (10) divided into not less than three chambers, roughly equal or progressively decreasing in size, by transverse perforated plates (20,22,24). Bolts (34) with nuts (36) at each end hold the plates, one nut bearing against the inlet end of the casing and the other against the last perforated plate which also forms the outlet end closure. Plate separation may be by steps in the bolt dia. (38), by collars around the bolts (40) or by spacer rings (42,44) around the inside of the casing. Identical perforations in the plates are up to 6 mm. dia. The second and subsequent plates have silencing discs (30), singly or in multiples, fitted against the upstream face. Holes equal in size to those in the perforated plates but fewer in number may be drilled in these discs, to reduce the press. drop through the silencer.
