Continuously rotating sleeve valve for a 4-stroke IC engine has a wormwheel fixed around its base by circlips. A worm driven from the crankshaft meshes with this wheel and rotates the sleeve at 1/4 crank speed. At the top, the outside surface of the sleeve is conical and makes a gastight sliding joint with a corresponding surface in the cylinder head under press. from an annular flat spring backing the thrust race on which the sleeve runs. In this part of the sleeve there are two diametrically opposed ports. In combination with pairs of inlet and outlet ports, also diametrically opposed, in the cylinder these act as valves to control the cyclic gas flow. The flow is guided by grooves in an insert in the cylinder head, projecting inside the sleeve. The thrust race has a separate lubricant supply, and return.
|
