Chloroalkyl quaternary ammonium chlorides are made by reacting chlorine, an alkene and a tertiary amine in the absence of water. Suitable reaction temperatures are 0-30 DEG C. and the reaction may be effected in an organic polar solvent. The tertiary amine may be acyclic or heterocyclic. The invention also comprises the compounds 1-(2-chloroethyl)-pyridinium chloride, 1 - (2 - chloroethyl-quinolinium chloride, 2 - (2 - chloroethyl)isoquinolinium chloride, 1 - (2 - chloroethyl)-1,4 - ethanopiperazinium chloride, 2 - chloroethyltriethyl-ammonium chloride, (1-chloro-2-octyl)-and (2 - chloro - 1 - octyl) - pyridinium chlorides, (1 - chloro - 2 - dodecyl)- and (2-chloro - 1 - dodecyl)-, (1 - chloro - 2 - octadecyl)-and (2-chloro-1-octadecyl)-pyridinium chlorides. The chlorides may be converted to other salts, e.g. the picrates, chlorolaurates, bischloromercurates and chloroferrates. The examples relate to the above compounds. |
