Crude clay with a minimum content of 27 % by weight of SiO2 and a maximum content of 40 % by weight of Al2O3 is precomminuted to fragment sizes of less than 180 mm. The particle fraction larger than 40 mu m is removed from the precomminuted and then finely processed crude clay. The water content of the residual particle fraction is adjusted to a predefined nominal value, and this particle fraction is then fed to further conversion into expandable clay. The process enables the use and processing of even low-quality, contaminated crude clay for the production of expandable clay. The processing is particularly economical and can be carried out using a small amount of energy and labour and at low cost with long service lives and low wear of the equipment used, giving a product of constantly high quality.
