A vessel 9 for the storage of biological substances at cryogenic temperatures has an eccentric access opening 1 arranged so that the axis 12 of the vessel passes through the opening. As shown, the vessel comprises an inner container 4 which is joined to the outer shell of the vessel only at the neck 11 defining the opening and supports an upstanding pivot 3. A rotatable plate 2 is provided with a sleeve 5, the upper end of which rests on pivot 3; a bearing 7 being provided to centre the sleeve on the pivot. A removable driving rod 8 is engageable with the sleeve to rotate the plate so as to bring the canisters 10 stored thereon beneath the access opening. In a modification (Figs. 3 to 5, not shown) the plate is omitted and each of the canisters 10 is provided on its side with a vertical rod; in use the canisters are grouped so that all of the rods pass through the access opening adjacent the axis of the vessel.</p> |
