Recovery of dry sorbitol from concentrated aqueous sorbitol solns or sorbitol melts. G3A. is effected by spraying sorbitol soln. (pref. not less than 60% on dry substance) or sorbitol melt on to stirred bed of sorbitol crystals (temp. of mixing zone pref. maintained at 40 degrees C to 90 degrees C). and formed steam opt. removed continuously with warm gases at 60 degrees to 140 degrees C; for single run pref. 50 to 500% sorbitol soln. or melt sprayed on crystals. The dried pure white, odourless product is suitable as a pourable sweetening agent for diabetics or for medicinal purposes. In an example, 80% salt-free sorbitol soln. sprayed on agitated sorbitol crystals maintained at 60-80 degrees C vapourised water being removed. In second zone crystals re-dried and milled, 50% dried sorbitol removed, rest recycled.
