Ventilation system, e.g. for steel works, has a ventilator hood which is mounted in a building at a distance above a source of hot exhaust or waste gases and which has a built in suction ventilator fan, which produces a partial vacuum within the hood allowing rising hot gases to be sucked away. A series of open bottom chambers (40) is mounted in the periphery of the hood (25). An additional fan (43) is used to blow cold air from the exterior of the building being ventilated back down into the chambers (40) surrounding the hood (25) periphery.
