Deep hole seabed drill derrick base in a ring or other specialised ship employs conventional ring floats and an additional hemispherical body which forms an open bottom cup in the centre of the system of floats. The cup can be carried on hollow rings and lattice or tube structures and a centrally positioned bottom ring acting as supporting foot. An inner hemisphere can be enclosed within the main body, open at the bottom, with possibly an interposed layer of nonferrous metal, rustproof steel or self-lubricating plastics so that the two cups slide relatively. The inner hemisphere can be surmounted by a tube or grid structure and above this by an emergency platform carried on sealed containers, with hollow box section levers built in between the platform and the floodable buoyancy containers.
