The diaphragm consists of an asbestos fibre sheet, of S.G 1.0, and made from a mixt. of fibres and water plus a water-soluble alkali-resistant hardening binder which is 5% of the fibre wt. The low binder content does not affect the permeability the sheet does not swell, its fibres are open, it offers low resistance to current, the sheet can be less than 2.5 mm thick, it is stable and rigid and has a long service life.
