The in-seam borer for a coalmine is used in production, rescue and exploratory operations. It is held stably between floor and roof using a guide to hold the spindle. The in-seam borer is stabilised between roof and floor, and the guide keeps the spindle on line as it rotates within a longitudinal in-hole guide system made of half shells. To stabilise the shells (11,12,13) around the longitudinal axis of the bore, tools (20') are fitted on the guide either side of the spindle. - Each tool cuts (21,22) down to floor level, and the hole is kept in the correct line by means of a pendulum balance, mounted above the guide shells. Preferably the side tools (20') should be mounted on discs (20) turning on axles (18) standing parallel to the seam in the guide system.
