1447609 Plasticizing polymers CANADIAN INDUSTRIES Ltd 1 July 1974 [12 July 1973 30 Jan 1974] 29094/74 Heading C3P An ethylenically unsaturated monomer is polymerized in aqueous suspension or emulsion in the presence of a plasticizer which is very slightly soluble in water to form an aqueous dispersion of the polymer having an intrinsic viscosity of 0À20 to 1À0 dl./g. The emulsion polymerizatiion process preferably chosen is one wherein all or most of the emulsifier is constituted by a polymerizable ionic monomer. Suitable plasticizers are esters and polyesters and suitable monomers include vinyl acetates styrenes, methacylic acid, acrylates and methacrylates, monobutyl maleate, and sodium allyl sulphonate. The polymers can be used in paints and on drying give dry particles. |
