1480204 Polymeric laminated films W R GRACE & CO 5 March 1976 [10 March 1975] 9047/76 Headings B5N and B5B A laminated polymeric film comprises (a) a film of nylon, (b) a film of a mono-alpha olefin polymer which is cross-linkable by radiation, and (c) an adhesive layer comprising organic polymer diposed between these films, the polymer having cross-linkable olefin-derived units as the major component thereof; said laminated assembly being cross-linked to an extent equivalent to a radiation dosage absorbed thereby of at least 6 Megarads for each of the specified films (a) and (b) and layer (c). In a preferred embodiment the laminated comprises a film (b) an adhesive layer (c) a film (a), an adhesive layer (c) and a film (b), the film (a) consisting of four layers and each film (b) of two layers. The laminate may be made by co-extruding the layers, e.g. in the form of tubing and cross-linking the resultant laminate by ionizing radiation, the tubing being optionally coiled and flattened prior to irradiation. The nylon may be polycaproamide, polyhexamethylene adipamide, polyhexamethylene sebacamide, polycaprylamide, polyundecanoamide or polydodecanamide and the mono-alpha olefin polymer may be polyethylene, polypropylene, polybutene-1 or an ethylene/vinylacetate copolymer. The polymeric adhesive may be homopolymer, copolymer, terpolymer, block copolymer, graft copolymer or an ionomeric copolymer, the exemplified copolymer being an ionomer. The product of the invention may be used for packaging, e.g. of foodstuffs.
|
