<p>1442823 Printing PRATT & LAMBERT Inc 16 Aug 1973 [12 July 1973] 38683/73 Heading B6C [Also in Division C3] A raised or three-dimensional graphic pattern effect is produced on a substrate by selectively applying thereto a medium including a liquid vehicle capable of forming a polymeric film on the substrate, and, forming a disperse phase in said vehicle, from 1 to 45%, based on the weight of non-volatiles in said medium, of thermally expandable thermoplastic microspheres, drying the medium and simultaneously or subsequently heating the selectively coated substrate, to expand the microspheres. Examples are given in which (a) an ink formulation comprising butyl methacrylate resin, polyvinylidene chloride microspheres containing neopentane and a colorant is applied using patterned gravure rolls to aluminium foil, paper-backed aluminium foil, kraft paper, board stock, and polyvinyl chloride film and the printed substrates are heated; (b) a similar formulation, containing no colorant, is applied by silk-screening on to glass and heated to give an expanded design; (c) a formulation comprising ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer emulsions, the said microspheres and titanium dioxide is (i) brushed on to paper in a random pattern, dried and further heated, (ii) sprayed on to aluminium through a stencil and dried, or (iii) printed on adhesive-backed white wallpaper stock using a gravure roll and heated; (d) a formulation comprising latex of hydroxyethyl methacrylate/2 - ethylhexyl acrylate/ methyl methacrylate copolymer, the said microspheres and titanium dioxide is printed on to fibreglass fabric using a patterned rotogravure roll, dried and heated and (e) a formulation as in (d) except that the latex is of ethylene/ hydroxyethyl acrylate copolymer, is printed as in (d) on to fabrics and weaves of cotton, cotton-polyester, rayon, polyester, polyacrylonitrile and polypropylene.</p> |
