1480453 Lubricants RHONE-POULENC INDUSTRIES 30 May 1975 [31 May 1974] 23688/75 Heading C5F [Also in Division C3] Lubricating oil compositions comprise as dispersant, detergent, anti-rust and thickening agents alkenyl succinic anhydrides, or acids, or salts or reaction products thereof with polyols or polyamines, prepared by reacting maleic acid or anhydride with a polymer of molecular weight 150 to 100,000 derived from a C 2-30 monoolefin at 150‹ to 280‹ C. and 1 to 10 kg./cm.<SP>2</SP> absolute in the presence of 0À002 to 0À6 gram atoms of bromine per gram molecule of polyolefin. The bromine may be introduced as free bromine, hydrobromic acid, mono- or dibromosuccinic acid or anhydride or mono- or dibrominated polyolefin, preferably after 25 to 70 % of the olefin polymer has reacted. The olefin polymer may be a homopolymer, copolymer of two or more olefins, or copolymer of an olefin with a diene, triene or vinyl aromatic compound. Examples describe alkenyl succinic anhydrides prepared by reacting polyisobutylene with maleic anhydride in the presence of (3) hydrogen bromide, (4) hydrobrominated polyisobutylene, (5) dibromosuccinic anhydride, (6 to 11) polyisobutylene dibromide and (12 to 14) bromine. |
