1391908 Purification of adiponitrile IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 16 June 1972 [23 July 1971 19 Jan 1972] 34624/71 and 2638/72 Heading C2C A process for removing 2-cyanocyclopenten- ( 1 )-ylamine from a mixture with adiponitrile comprises heating the mixture with water, substantially free of dissolved inorganic matter at 130-280‹ C. to hydrolyse the 2-cyanocyclopenten-(l)-ylamine, and separating adiponitrile from the resulting mixture. The starting mixture may be the low-boiling fraction obtained by distilling crude adiponitrile, prepared by dehydrative amination of adipic acid. The process may be applied to the continuous process for the manufacture and refining of adiponitrile.
