Motor vehicle disc brake assembly - has parallel side plates separated by integral radial vanes for high thermal conductivity

The brake disc (1) consists of two parallel side plates separated by a number of integrally formed radial vanes (10). The side plates (1) are joined to a hub by a number of vanes (3) inclined at an angle of about 75 deg. to a radial line. The vanes increase the effective thermal conductivity of the brake disc and so assist in the rapid dissipation of the heat generated when the brakes are applied. In addition the vanes create the effect of a centrifugal fan. Air is drawn in axially between the vanes (3) and expelled through the passages (11) between the vanes (10). This flow of air increases the rate of heat dissipation even more.
