Vascular collagenous graft prosthesis succinylation - confers antiplatelet and antithrombogenic props

The performance of a graft prosthesis is improved by making the prosthesis of collagen and increasing its net negative internal surface charge by succinylation. The (vascular) prosthesis is less susceptible to thrombosis. The collagen used may be a dialdehyde starch-tanned bovine collagen vascular heterograft (Johnson & Johnson). This is then treated with succinic anhyd. in basic soln. in the presence of a NaHCO3 buffer. Any positive charge remaining sterns from arginine and histidine residues both of which may be treated by reaction with phenyl glyoxal and diethyl pyrocarbonate resp.
