Floating roof for a liq. storage tank which moves vertically as the liq. level rises and falls in the tank has a seal supported between a side wall of the roof and the tank wall in the form of individual sealing sections of polygonal cross section. Each section consists of a block of synthetic foam enclosed in an abrasion and liq. resistant rubber or plastic coated fabric cover. the sections are each secured to a plate bolted to the rim of the floating roof and supported at its lower edge in a channel formed in the side wall of the roof. The seal is easily installed in the space between the roof and the tank wall because the individual sections can be placed in position one at a time and their size can be regulated so that they are easily handled by one man. If the seal is damaged during service only the defective section(s) and not the whole seal need be removed and replaced.
