New perfluoroalkylacetyl chlorides have formula (I) Rf-CH2COCl (where Rf is a 4-12C (pref. 6-12C) straight-chain perfluoroalkyl radical). Cpds. (I) are useful as intermediates for esters which can be used as surfactants and textile finishing agents. E.g. reaction, with polyalkylene glycols gives surfactants for use in organic cleaning solvents. A typical cpd. is perfluorooctylacetyl chloride. In an example, this is prepd. by reacting perfluoroctylethanol with Cl2 while irradiating with UV light.
|
