The hand held label printer with a gripping handle extending horizontally underneath the supply roll, and with a swinging operating handle underneath it, with the printing head pushed down onto the surface of the label, has a head (A) acting as a pressure member, consisting of three main units. One is a printing unit (10), the second is a sliding plate arrangement (9) and the third is an outer frame (8). Between them are equaliser springs (17) and return springs (18). A member (13) presses together the equaliser springs (17) in the head (A) as the printing mechanism (10) moves upwards before resting on the surface of the label (a'). Another device swings the printing unit away by using the energy in the equaliser springs.
