Antibacterial (5)-nitroheterocyclyl-(2)-amidrazones - with broad-spectrum activity, also amoebicidal, trichomonacidal and coccidiostatic activity

Amidrazones of formula (I) are new together with their acid addn. salts (where R' is alkyl; R2 is H, alkyl or phenyl; either Y is -CH= and X is O or S, or Y is -N= and X is S or -NH- opt. substd. by alkyl or hydroxyalkyl). (I) are broad-spectrum antibacterial agents, also having amoebicidal, trichononicidal and anticoccidial activity for human and veterinary use. A pref. cpd., N'-ethoxymethylene-1-methyl-5-nitroimidazole-2-carboxamidrazone, was prepd. by heating under reflux as mixture of 1 -methyl-5-nitroimidazole-2-carboxamidrazone and ethyl orthoformate.
