Zinc is produced by reducing zinc oxide with methane in the preferred temperature range between 750 DEG C and 906 DEG C, the required heat energy being supplied by a high-temperature nuclear reactor. From the waste gas mixture thus arising, which consists of carbon monoxide and hydrogen in a molar ratio of 1:2, methanol is synthesised. For the methanol synthesis, the gas mixture is preferably brought to a pressure above 40 atmospheres and to a temperature in the range from 200 DEG C to 450 DEG C in the presence of a mixed catalyst. With this combination of process steps, pure zinc in the molten form and methanol are obtained at relatively low production costs and low energy consumption.
