Engine with rotating-cum-reciprocating cylinders comprises two fixed pistons, each embodying valve gear, injection and ignition devices, with two cylinders linked by a rigid shaft reciprocating between them. Shaft centre has a gearwheel, and journal bearings for lateral support. Transverse oval guide surfaces at the back of the cylinders, bearing against fixed lugs, cause the cylinders to rotate as they reciprocate. The gearwheel on the shaft transmits the rotation only to an output plus timing shaft running parallel with it, through a second gearwheel on the latter. The compression ratio can be changed merely by altering the axial position of the pistons.
