The machine for grinding flat the ends of helical springs has a ring shaped grinding block (11) which is rotated by a drive (12) about a vertical axis. Coinciding with this axis, above the block, is a spindle (30) carrying a set of four equally spaced holders (13) each with four sleeves (14) to enclose a spring (16) each, and corresponding grippers (38) above. Each holder unit is rotated about a vertical spindle (39) driven by a motor (18) above, so that the four springs in each holder are rotated from the outside of the ring shaped grinding block to the inside. The drive system ensures that the springs are not ground at an excessive speed. The centre line of each spindle (39) is above the line halfway between the outside and inside diameters of the ring shaped block (11).
