Engine has an ante chamber in the cylinder head. The connecting passage between the ante chamber and the main combustion chamber contains the spark plug electrodes. The passage diameter (10) is greater where the spark plug electrodes enter than the passage diameter junction with the main combustion chamber. Ignition of a weaker than normal mixture is improved because the exhaust gases which remain after each power stroke are pushed back into the antechamber away from the spark plug electrodes on the compression stroke.
